    ESPN Star Sports may finally have some decent competition. There has been talk in the industry for a while now that a sports channel - backed by Sharjah cricket series? head honcho Abdulrahman Bukhatir - may be launching in the near future.
    National broadcaster Doordarshan?s DD Sports channel is there of course but being government backed, the equation is not quite the same.

    Industry sources indicate a deal is in the final stages of negotiations which will see the channel being launched as part of the Zee bouquet. No dates have been fixed though.

    Taj Sports, the company that Bukhatir set up to produce sports television programming out of Sharjah, which includes cricket, is said to be the channel?s promoter company. Chris McDonald, former ESPN Star Sports senior V-P, advertising and integrated sales, and the man Bukhatir hired to head Taj Sports, will be running the show, the sources say.

    What the channel will be providing - if and when it takes off - as far as programming is concerned is still unclear (other than the Sharjah cricket series that is). One could of course argue that that would still be better than what Sony?s MAX offers by way of cricket (Bangladesh and Seven?s cricket in Hong Kong).

    With HBO, Cartoon Network and CNN having just been added to Zee?s bouquet with the announcement of a joint venture with Turner International (India) Private Ltd, Zee will be able to offer a complete subscriber package if the Sports channel takes off.

    It should be recalled however, that Zee has been trying unsuccesfully to launch a sports channel for well on two years now. This time the tale may be different though; what with Bukhatir supposedly bankrolling the channel.

    DD National is hoping to counter competition from satellite channels, at least on the programming front.
    The national broadcaster has invited programme producers to offer their wares in the sponsored category for different time slots. In the prime time slot, DD has asked for three-day serials (Monday to Wednesday) as well as weekly serials. The genres invited are family drama, comedies, sitcoms and thrillers. Weekly serials at prime time have also been invited, according to advertisements released by pubcaster Prasar Bharati.

    The pubcaster is also looking for family serials on socially relevant issues on mid prime time slots on weekdays and composite infotainment on breakfast shows. True to its public service image, DD has also asked for programmes on consumer awareness, AIDS awareness, legal advice and population education and women?s issues on a weekly independent programme basis.

    DD has specified that the programme proposals, along with the pilots, should reach its Delhi office latest by 3 pm on 10 January 2002.

    Nickelodeon is practically absent from the viewerscope of Indian viewers. Nonetheless the channel, which claims to be available in over one hundred million homes in Asia, is aggressively promoting its latest creation Jimmy Neutron.Jimmy is a ten-year-old boy who constantly invents gadgets to improve the quality of his life. Unfortunately they often land him in a soup. The story is set in Retroville a suburban small town which reminds one of the 1950?s era. He has a mechanical dog Goddard, and also a close clique of friends Carl Wheezer, Cindy Vortex and Libby.

    Two things make Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius unique. First Jimmy is Nickelodeon?s first 3-D, computer graphics imagery (CGI) animated character. Second it is the first time that the channel is coming out with a product that covers at the same time the idiot box, the big screen and the online component (jimmyneutron.com).

    From Saturday 22 December the imagination of viewers on the telly will be shaken and stirred by a series of one-minute animated segments. This will be followed by music videos from the movie soundtrack. Teen pop stars Aaron Carter and Nick Cannon will interact with Jimmy. Viewers will also see cast and crew members from both the television series and the film talking about their experiences making them. The segments will give us a glimpse into what Jimmy?s life is like in school, at play and at home.

    The film has the voices of Patrick Stewart (Jeffrey) and Martin Short (Father of the Bride). It will premiere in Asia next Spring. The series will debut on the channel around the same time. Both have been produced in partnership with screenwriter and director Steve Oedekerk (Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls) and DNA Productions.

    Richard Cunningham, senior V-P Nickelodeon/MTV Networks Asia, had these comments to make: ?Our goal at Nickelodeon is to provide the best entertainment for kids. With the launch of Jimmy Neutron, kids throughout Asia will experience him not only on the channel but through movies, online, music and consumer products. The Nickelodeon audience will have a blast with Jimmy Neutron and the animated segments on Nickelodeon will be a taste of more to come through Nickelodeon, both on and off-air.?
