MUMBAI: Airbnb may join the streaming world soon as it has ambitions to create a studio to develop original shows, according to a report by Reuters. In the crowded travel industry, this move will help the company to distinguish itself from Booking.com, Expedia and others.
Airbnb is privately valued at $31 billion and is gearing up for an initial public offering of stock next year. According to the report, Airbnb chief executive Brian Chesky who wants the company to be “travel-everything", is driving the idea on the back of the logic that creative content is important for Airbnb’s brand.
The report also added that Airbnb has been discussing ideas for creating or licensing mini-series and documentaries about travel, and shows featuring Airbnb homes, guests and hosts. However, it has already worked on a television show called Home for Apple’s upcoming streaming service.
Airbnb’s top policy and communications executive, Chris Lehane, said earlier the company is considering streaming content through its own app along with other video platforms. “The more we put content out there, the more you’re going to bring people to the platform,” he commented as quoted by Reuters.
