KOLKATA: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has invited suggestions from academia, industry, related institutions, and the general public on encouraging research and development (R&D) in telecom and broadcasting sectors. The suggestions can be submitted till 15 March.
On 24 January, the authority conducted an online brainstorming session on 'encouraging research and development in the telecom and broadcasting sector' with academia, industry and R&D institutions.
TRAI chairman P D Vaghela highlighted the importance of indigenous R&D in telecom and broadcasting sectors, which will lead to increase in domestic manufacturing, and reduce equipment imports in these sectors. He also mentioned that both of the sectors have potential to play a key role in making India a five trillion dollar economy.
Along with that, TRAI secretary Sunil K Gupta highlighted the need for a strong academia industry, government linkage, and having a focused approach on R&D in these sectors.
Suggestions received during the deliberation included incentivising R&D efforts in India, need for structured approach to create a conducive environment for R&D focus, adoption of indigenous technologies, strong linkage of academia, research institutes and industry.
To achieve these objectives, a high-level committee of senior officials from academia, industry and research institutions, will be formed under the aegis of TRAI.
