NEW DELHI: Chairman & editor-in-chief of India TV Rajat Sharma, who celebrates his 64th birthday today, has donated a sum of Rs 64 lakh for the people affected by the glacial lake burst in Chamoli, Uttarakhand.
Taking to microblogging platform Twitter to share the news, Rajat Sharma tweeted: “Many people asked me how I will celebrate my birthday this year. It has been said in the shastras ‘People live for themselves, but those who live for philanthropy understand the true meaning of life.’ Today the workers in Uttarakhand need our support the most. On my 64th birthday, I am making a humble contribution of Rs 64 lakh for them.”

Uttarakhand witnessed massive devastation on 7 February when a portion of the Nanda Devi glacier burst in the Chamoli district, triggering a flash flood in the Alaknanda river system. The natural calamity wreaked havoc in the hilly state. Scores of houses were damaged, some completely demolished. Hundreds of people went missing. Over 50 bodies have been recovered. Uttarakhand, which is situated in the upper reaches of the ecologically fragile Himalayas was ravaged by floods and landslides in 2013 too, and is now faced with the arduous task of rebuilding itself again.
Earlier in March 2020, Rajat Sharma had donated Rs 1 crore to the Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund (PM-CARES Fund) to bolster the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.
