Sumo Dutta tipped to head Star's new digital initiatives

MUMBAI: Sumantra Dutta has relinquished his position as head of Radio City and will now again take on a role as one of Star India's core executive team. The formal return of Dutta to Star will be effective Monday.

This follows Star's exit from the radio business. Recently, GW Capital through its India Value Fund acquired controlling stake in Music Broadcast Pvt Ltd (MBPL) for Rs 300 million, the holding company for Radio City.

Before his move into the uncharted FM arena, Dutta was head of ad sales and marketing for Star Plus at the time it took off with the Amitabh Bachchan-hosted game show Kaun Banega Crorepati hitting the jackpot. He moved on to Star's radio business and was singularly responsible for establishing Radio City as a popular brand.

While Dutta was unavailable for comment on what his likely role in Star would be, company sources say he will be leading Star's charge in the area of newer technologies. These will in all likelihood also include direct-to-home (DTH) as well as News Corp's renewed interest in cyberspace --- Internet. It may be noted that Dutta is already heading Star's wireless division.
