MUMBAI: ESPN International has acquired the exclusive telecast rights in Latin America and the Pacific Rim for the Dutch First Division Football.
According to the new multi-year agreement, ESPN International will televise one Dutch First Division match per weekend to more than 50 countries and territories throughout Latin America and the Pacific Rim. The Dutch League is usually is one of the highest scoring leagues in Europe, according to an official release. The Dutch First Division includes three traditional powers - Ajax Amsterdam, PSV Eindhoven, and Feyenoord Rotterdam - all of whom collectively boast 11 European titles.
Current League and Cup champions Ajax is one of only four European clubs to have captured all three major European trophies - the European Cup, UEFA Cup, and UEFA Cup Winners Cup. Feyenoord captured Europe's second biggest title in 2002 - the UEFA Cup. Many world-class players have played in the Dutch League, including Brazil’s Romario and Ronaldo, Denmark’s World Cup star Jon Dahl Tomasson, and Holland’s Patrick Kluivert. More than a dozen Latin Americans currently play in the Dutch League, including Brazilans Wamberto, who has been an important player for Ajax the past few seasons, and Leonardo, who helped Feyenoord secure the UEFA Cup.
The acquisition of Dutch First Division Football bolsters ESPN International’s roster of European football programming that also includes the Spanish Premier League and UEFA Champions League. ESPN International wholly owns or has equity interest in 25 networks outside of the United States, says the release. ESPN International transmits in 11 languages (Arabic, Cantonese, English, French, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Portuguese, and Spanish) to over 145 countries and territories and is distributed to nearly 120 million homes around the world.
