    MUMBAI: Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific senior vice president & general manager ?South Asia Rahul Johri was conferred the "CEO of the Year" award at the Broadcasting Industry Awards organised by the World Brand Congress.

    With over 19 years of experience in the industry, Rahul has worked across media verticals, from news channels, magazines and news dailies.

    The award was given in recognition of Johri?s impactful strategy in establishing Discovery as the leading non-fiction media company in the country and his inspiring leadership to build a robust and varied portfolio of eight unique channels, led by the leading factual entertainment brand - the Discovery Channel.

    Johri has been responsible for the company?s expansion and growth including its localisation strategy and launch of multiple language feeds across brands. His venture to launch the game changing channel in the kids genre, Discovery Kids, has received industry wide applaud. His recent initiative is Discovery?s association with India Today Group to launch Discovery Channel Magazine in India.

    Johri joined Discovery in 2001 and currently leads its South Asia operations. He is responsible for the overall growth strategy of India?s highest quality factual and lifestyle portfolio including Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, TLC, Discovery Science, Discovery Turbo, Discovery HD World, Discovery Tamil and Discovery Kids.

    Rahul is also credited with commissioning a range of acclaimed series including Living with a Superstar: Shah Rukh Khan, What Not to Wear: India, Oh My Gold!, and Be Blunt with Adhuna Akhtar. He also spearheaded Discovery Channel?s association with Yash Raj Films for the latest release Jab Tak Hai Jaan and with the Indian Army for its women officers? expedition to Mount Everest in 2012.

  • Discovery Turbo takes viewers 'Inside Grand Prix'

    MUMBAI: With the F1 race taking place in Delhi this weekend, Discovery Turbo has kicked off another season of the show ?Inside Grand Prix?.

    The half-hour show airs every night at 9 pm.

    The episode, featuring Buddh International circuit, will air on 28 October at 9 pm. The show will also present Nico Hulkenburg, the Force India driver talking about the India circuit. Other drivers that will be showcased include Nico Rosberg, Michael Schumacher Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton.

    The 20-part series features 20 Formula 1 racing circuits across globe including India, Australia, Malaysia and China.

    The show showcases the tracks which are hosts to some of the most challenging motorsports events in the world and are well suited for the requirements of powerful, high-spec racing cars and motorcycles. The series chronicles original shots and contemporary witnesses to recollect records, touching moments, legends and tragedies. In each episode, fans go behind the scenes for exclusive interviews and stories of Formula One.

    The series also captures the build up, competitive drive and racing drama from the world of F1 racing. The racers introduce the race track and answer all questions in the techno segment and the 3D-animation, demonstrating the particularities of each track, its turns, weather conditions and car performance. There is more excitement if you want to know how Pit Stop is set up. Each episode features the legends of the Formula 1 race recalling the ?Old days? with original shots of the races and victories on the race.

  • Discovery Turbo ties up with Red Bull India for special

    MUMBAI: Discovery Turbo joins Red Bull India to take the Formula 1 car to the Khardung-La in Ladakh region. At 18,300 feet, the Khardungla Pass is a hostile road, hardly the place for a Formula 1 car.

    The special ‘Khardung-LA: Race Car Extreme‘ follows the F1 car and its daring driver Neel Jani push to their limit on the highest altitude possible and create a new world record.

    The special will air on 21 October at 8 pm on Discovery Turbo. The programme will simulcast on Discovery and Discovery Tamil.

    The special will track the Red Bull Racing Team as it takes up the challenge of battling technological barriers and overcomes human performance element on their exciting new mission to drive to Khardung-La. Lack of oxygen, extreme terrain and uneven roads are the reasons why no one has ever dared to run an F1 car at this world‘s highest motor able road.

    Red Bull‘s driver Neel Jani, an experienced motorist, becomes the first driver to take the challenge to drive Formula 1 car to the world famous Khardung-La pass, in a drive of a lifetime. Neel, a native of Switzerland (of Indian origin), has been a part of many memorable drives for Red Bull and won accolades such as A1 Grand Priz season 2007-08.

    The special will take viewers behind the scenes at the Red Bull Racing factory in Milton Keynes, through United Kingdom to New Delhi and to the Ladakh valley. The programme features the logistics details required to undertake this mission which involved transporting the car and 5 tons of Formula One equipment up the long and three-day treachorous journey from Delhi to Leh.

    In low oxygen conditions, the team pushed themselves and Formula 1 car to run at 18,380 feet in the Khardung-La pass to create the world record.

    Viewers will witness the challenges to drive through inhospitable roads and extreme weather conditions.

    MUMBAI: Discovery Turbo will kick off the weekly show, ?Car Science?, tonight at 10 pm.

    Can you really make a car explode by shooting its gas tank? What?s the best paint job for your ride? How does Hollywood create a car crash? Can a car actually stop on a dime? The show will seek to answer car questions, showcase experiments, graphics, high-speed footage analysis, a cast of characters.

    Each episode will break down eight questions. The show gets into the bottom of questions and solves the most provocative and entertaining car uncertainties you can imagine. The motto is simple - If you want to know, it will be broken down, torn apart, until an answer is found. For the first time ever, viewers will get to see things that until now have been too small, too fast or too hard to reach The show leverages technology to measure momentum, friction and laws of gravity acting on a car. The show includes countdown of the five best muscle cars, blingiest cars and expensive cars.

    In one episode the show gets technical behind the wheel and covers all the bases of how to perform the perfect car jump, from the approach speed to the angle of takeoff and the landing; getting the right recipe is vital to emerge unscathed.

    The episode analyses the science of aerodynamics and turbulence, putting three convertibles with very different ways of deflecting the wind to the test to find out which one?s best for keeping a baldie?s wig in place can really save a driver from an explosion.
