MUMBAI: The U.S. fan base for South Korean serial TV dramas are on the rise, say reports. Though the U.S. audiences for Korean television dramas are relatively small, they seem to be bowled over by the quality of the soaps.
Stations in Chicago, Philadelphia, Honolulu, Los Angeles, Seattle, Washington and New York offer several Korean shows daily. Though these areas have sizable Korean-American populations, it is not just Korean-Americans who have developed a fancy for Korean TV dramas.
Korean soaps generally deal with families and family values. The subtle manners with which lovemaking and romantic scenes are being picturised have gone very well with the family audience. The audience is attracted by these cleaner shows.
Another quality that has created this high regard for Korean soaps among Americans is their reality factor. Their superficial resemblance to American soap operas has also been doing a significant role in their popularity among the Americans.
The soap that enjoys a superb run currently is Dae Jang Geum which tells the saga of a servant girl who rose from the royal kitchens to become personal physician to a 16th century king. That message board for the daily family drama "Yellow Handkerchief" which concluded recently, recorded more than 1,700 posts in a single day, say reports.
