NEW DELHI: The 2021 Golden Globe nominations are finally here. Netflix original royal drama The Crown and David Fincher's Mank are the frontrunners in the television and film categories respectively at the much-awaited awards ceremony which is all set to take place on 28 February amid pandemic restrictions.
The contenders for the awards which is into its 78th year were announced across 25 categories in film and television in a virtual event on Wednesday. The nominees and winners for the prestigious awards are selected by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA).
Nominations in the pandemic year were dominated by streaming services, with Netflix leading the race in both film and television categories with as many as 42 nominations.
Its original royal drama The Crown will compete with Lovecraft Country, The Mandalorian, Ozark and Ratched for the best television series, drama. Actress Olivia Coleman, who plays Queen Elizabeth II in The Crown has also been nominated for best performance by an actress in a television series, drama along with Emma Corin, who portrays Princess Diana in the same series.
In the films category, David Fincher's Mank earned the maximum nominations. The American biographical drama film will compete with The Father, Nomadland, Promising Young Woman and The Trial of the Chicago 7 for the best motion picture (drama).
The coming of age period drama Queen's Gambit which debuted on Netflix in 2020 also earned a nomination in the best limited series, along with Small Axe, The Undoing, Unorthodox and Normal People.
Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman who died last year due to cancer was nominated posthumously for the best actor in drama film award for his performance in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. Other nominees include Riz Ahmed for Sound of Metal; Anthony Hopkins for The Father, Gary Oldman for Mank and Tahar Rahim for The Mauritanian.
The nominees for actress in a drama film are: Frances McDormand for Nomadland, Viola Davis for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Carey Mulligan for Promising Young Woman Vanessa Kirby for Pieces of a Woman and Andra Day for The United States vs. Billie Holiday.
The Emmy award-winning comedy series Schitt's Creek also earned a nomination for best television series, musical or comedy along with Ted Lasso, The Great, The Flight Attendant and Emily in Paris.
Borat Subsequent Movie, Hamilton, Music, Palm Springs and The Prom are nominated for best musical or comedy.
The ceremony will also honour TV pioneer Norman Lear with the Carol Burnett Award for his lifetime of achievement.
The awards ceremony will be bicoastal for the first time in history, with the hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler splitting duties from two locations -- New York and the Beverly Hilton, where the show is typically held.
